  1. “I wasn’t about to go through that flaming door, so I slammed a big rock though a window and pulled myself in.” (p. 91) I like this quote because I thought it was brave and not many people would run into a burning building.

“Darry didn’t like me… he had driven me away that night… he had hit me… Darry hollered at me all the time… he didn’t give a hang about me…. Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying.” (p. 98) I can relate this to my dad, because even though he does things that make me made he still loves me.

    Discussion Question:
Why do you think Ponyboy and Johnny risked their lives to ran into the burring church and save the children?

  2. “‘Johnny,’ Dally said in a pleading, high voice, using a tone I had never heard from him before, ‘Johnny, I ain’t mad at you. I just don’t want you to get hurt. You don’t know what a few months in jail can do to you. Oh, blast it, Johnny’… ‘you get hardened in jail. I don’t want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me…’”(p.89-90) This quote surprise me because they had always described Dally as only caring about himself and being hard and tough but it sounded like he really cared for Johnny.

    “‘Is that guy coming?’
Johnny shook his head. ‘The window stopped him.’
    ‘Too scared?’
‘Naw…’ Johnny gave me a grin. ‘Too fat’
    I couldn’t laugh because I was scared I’d drown in the smoke.”(p.92)
I liked this quote because I think it showed that Johnny had a sense of humor and what he might have been like before he got beat-up. I did find it a little strange though, that they were making a joke while they were walking into a burning building.

Question: In the book it said that Jerry knew where Ponyboy lived because they had gotten it off his address card in his billfold. What is a billfold?

  3. “Darry thought I was just another mouth to feed and somebody to holler at. Darry
love me? I thought of those hard, pale eyes. Soda was wrong for once, I thought. Darry
doesn't love anyone or anything, except maybe Soda” (page 17) This quote shows how even though Darry has sacrificed a lot for Ponyboy be still does not fell connected to him as a brother for he has a hard exterior.

"It ain't fair!" I cried passionately. "It ain't fair that we have all the rough breaks!”(page 38) This, quote, while short, is a crux of the story for it seems that throughout it the greasers have it tougher for they do not live the good life. The have o fend for their own and work hard, this makes tensions higher for there is already a wedge between the classes.

Question: Why does Ponyboy still dislike Darry so much even after he has become a parent in many ways to him.

  4. "Then we all froze. Faintly, just faintly, toy could hear someone yelling. And it sounded like it was coming from the church. The woman went white." (Page. 91) I like this quote because it portrays the intensity of the situation very well.

"I opened my eyes. It was dark. I'm moving, i thought, Are they taking me to jail?" I like this quote because it shows how nervous Ponyboy still is.

Question: Will Ponyboy's charges be dropped because he saved the kids?

  5. "Stay gold"

This quote refers to the Robert Frost poem. Johhhny tells Ponnyboy to stay innocent and be true to yourself.

"Socs will be socs, greasers will be greasers"

This quote means that socs and the greasers will stay the same. Greasers will always be rich and socs will be poor. Greasers will always bully the socs.

After Bob died, did Cherry ever show emotion?

  6. "Greasers will still be greasers and Socs will still be Socs. Sometimes I think it’s the ones in the middle that are really the lucky stiffs."
This means that no matter how hard they try, the Socs and the greasers can never rise above their current power. That the people that aren't in one of those classes should be lucky.

    "Stay gold Ponyboy, stay gold"
Johnny said this right before he died to Ponyboy. This quote meant for Ponyboy to stay innocent and never change how he acts about things, or how he loves to read.
Question: Will Ponyboy get in trouble after saving the kids from the church fire?

  7. “He was stroking my hair and I could hear the sobs racking him as he fought to keep back the tears. ‘Oh, Pony, I thought we’d lost you… like we did Mom and Dad…’ ”(98).
This quote shows that Darry actually does care about Ponyboy. He is not a hardened criminal with no feeling, he is a normal older brother.

“All three of us like chocolate cake for breakfast.”(105).
This shows the connection that the three boys have. It shows that they are a real family, and not just a couple kids that live together because they have to.

Will Darry ever go to college?
