Quote #1: "It is better to be alone, she figures, than to be with someone who can't see who you are. It is better to lead than to follow. It is better to speak up than stay silent." Matthew does not accept Frankie for who she is. She is better off without him. They are never getting back together.
Quote #2: "She will not be simple and sweet. She will not be what people tell her she should be. That Bunny Rabbit is dead. " Frankie will be a strong person and independent. She doesn't want people telling her what to do.
Question: Did Frankie and her ex boyfriend Porter ever meet? and what did Porter wanted to tell Frankie?
Quote 1- “I mean, really don’t know you, Frankie. It’s not like they had decided to ignore me. You know how it feels when someone is ignoring you. You can feel they know you’re there. This was like they didn’t register me as a person they had ever known.” “Frankie nodded, but she was not thinking about Star. She was thinking how easy it would be for the same thing to happen to her.” I think that if your friends and boyfriend could so easily forget you and pretended they never new you it is probable a sign that there not true friends. So I was surprised when Frankie continued to think of them as friend even when knowing this.
Quote 2- “Frankie wore the T-shirt the next day, and knew from how people looked at her that everyone knew it was Matthew’s…[Zada said] wearing his T-shirt is like wearing a sign that says ‘Property of Matthew Livingston’ on your breasts.” I agree with Zada I think it is a little bit like that which I found odd because it seem like she want people to know it was his but then she talks about how she wants people to think about her in terms of her mind not her body.
Question- How good friends were Zada with Matthew? How well did she know him?
"'They call you The Goober?' 'Yes.' 'Yes, what?' ... the kid Goubert stammered and said, 'Yes, sir.'" (p. 30) I like this quote because it shows how much power Archie has, even over other students.
"'Listen, Goubert. The assignment is more important than anything else, understand? More important than you, me, or the school.'" (p. 57) I think that this is a good quote because it shows how seriously the vigils take these assignments.
Q: Will Goubert ever be fully accepted by the Vigils?
“She will not be simple and sweet. She will not be what people tell her she should be.” This quote is an example of how Frankie goes out of the social norm and tries figuring out Mathews secret club. "“Matthew had called her harmless. Harmless. And being with him made Frankie feel squashed into a box - a box where she was expected to be sweet and sensitive (but not oversensitive); a box for young and pretty girls who were not as bright or as powerful as their boyfriends. A box for people who were not forces to be reckoned with." This quote explains a lot of the book in just one quote. Matthew is the powerful, popular guy that only want s girl thats not as good has him, so he can always feel needed. Question: Why does Frankie care so much about being popular?
“ ‘What secret?’ confused now. ‘That you’re a fairy. A queer. Living in the closet, hiding away.’ Vomit threatened Jerry’s throat, a nauseous geyser he could barely hold down.”(210). This quote shows what Emile Janza is truly like. He could have just beat up Jerry, but instead he attacked him emotionally. That is probably worse.
“ ‘You know who’s sub-human, man? You. You are. Going to school everyday. And back home on the bus. And do your homework.’ The guy’s voice was contemptuous. ‘Square boy. Middle aged at fourteen, fifteen. Already caught in routine. Wow.’ “(21).
This quote explains that people should not be so serious all the time. People are too uptight, and should relax a little bit. Even the teenagers.
